The 7 Best Foods for Your Heart

Red Wine

Although most consider wine to be a treat, some heart health experts suggest breaking out the bottle more often than you may think. One glass of red wine per day may decrease the risk of heart disease, but moderation is key — more than one or two a day could do just the opposite. Red wine is full of antioxidants, which are thought to be responsible for increasing HDL cholesterol levels, or the “good” cholesterol that is necessary for heart health. Antioxidants in red wine may also protect the arteries from damage, further decreasing the risk of heart disease. Resveratrol, another ingredient found in red wine, may help decrease LDL cholesterol levels and prevent blood clots. While red wine may be a great addition to a heart-healthy diet, talk to your doctor before increasing your alcohol intake.
