Halloween Safety

Jack-o’-lanterns are a staple for Halloween fun, but knives and fire are not kid-friendly. If choosing to carve a pumpkin, only allow adults to wield the knife. When lighting the pumpkin, keep it on a sturdy surface, away from anything flammable like curtains or tablecloths. Some safe alternatives include letting your children paint the pumpkin or decorate it with glitter, stickers or googly-eyes rather than slicing it. Also consider using flashlights, fake candles or glow sticks to illuminate it. Make sure all costumes are made out of flame-retardant fabrics (it should say so on the packaging). Nylon or polyester fabrics are safe choices if making a costume. Be careful not to walk near any flames.
