How to Eat Like a Champion During Football Season

Try Hummus or Guac instead of Mayo-Based Dips

This football Sunday, pass on the French onion dip and go for some hummus. Hummus is made from mashed chickpeas, tahini (sesame paste), garlic and heart-healthy olive oil. It contains a significant amount of protein and fiber, unlike fatty cream-based dips. The sesame seeds in tahini paste also contain high levels of magnesium, and the heart-healthy antioxidants found in garlic can lower cholesterol and improve blood flow. Keep in mind that, with 25 calories per tablespoon or 408 per cup, hummus isn’t necessarily light on the calories. Guacamole is also high in calories, so remember portion control. Guacamole typically includes avocados, diced tomatoes, garlic, lemon or lime juice, cilantro, onion and tomatoes. Avocados typically contain 235 calories each, but a heart-healthy amount of vitamin K. Vitamin K prevents the blood from clotting and improves the body's ability to absorb and use calcium.
