Patti LaBelle, cont'd

Family history plays a role in the risk of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Many of LaBelle’s close relatives experienced severe complications from diabetes. Her uncle went blind and eventually died from damage caused by uncontrolled diabetes, while her mother had her legs amputated. Patti has gone on to become a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association in an effort to prevent other families from experiencing what her family has gone through. “Don’t let this disease control you,” LaBelle said. “You can handle it!” Outside of diabetes, LaBelle has supported other health charities, including the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Red Cross.
