Summer Food Safety Tips
Before you use your grill for the first time each year, be sure it’s in working order and ready for use. For propane grills, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends checking all connections and hoses for any leaks by spraying soapy water on all connection points on the propane tank where gas could potentially leak from. Before spraying the soapy water, remember to turn off and close the gas tank. Once you spray, reopen the tank and see if any bubbles have begun to form on the connection points — this indicates a leak. If you find a leak, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again. If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately. For charcoal grills, remember to keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. When you’re finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing them in a metal container.
